Florida OSHA Safety Training
OSHA Safety Training in Florida follows statewide suggestions for risk management. The courses provided are available both online, through self-paced computer training and on-site courses provided under the OSHA Outreach Training Program. Since Florida is not a State Plan state, employers operate under the federal guidelines established under the OSH Act of 1970. The OSHA General Duty Clause mandates that all companies provide a safe environment for their workers.
The Florida Department of Health overseas all governmental surveillance and compliance of state and federal regulations and directives. The Occupational Health and Safety Program (OHSP) uses it’s endeavors to monitor workplace related injuries and illnesses, then use that information to create new guidelines that will help prevent those risks to the State’s workforce. Specifically, the OSHP cites the following areas of critical monitoring:
- Work-Related Hospitalizations
- Fatal Work Injuries
- Work-Related Amputations
- Work-Related Burns
- Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders
- Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in Workers
- Work-Related Pesticide-Associated Illness and Injury
- Work-related Illnesses such as Mesothelioma and Pneumoconiosis
Florida OSHA Safety Training For Non-State Plan States
OSHA Safety Training is suggested and encouraged through the various Florida state agencies. Florida is not an OSHA State Plan participant. While the Florida OHSP monitors workplace compliance, company compliance largely based in federal OSHA regulations, guidelines, rules and directives. OSHA established the OSHA Outreach Training Program to provide workers with an easy way to study and receive their OSHA Wallet Card. For construction workers, this includes the OSHA 10 Hour Construction Training Course which is an essential training that covers a wide variety of OSHA monitored safety hazards. This 10 hour course for OSHA safety takes approximately two days to complete online, but up to 180 days can be allowed to complete it. The course comes with access to a downloadable study guide that is free of charge. Once the course is completed and the final exam is passed, the student is allowed to print off a temporary certificate of completion that may be sufficient at most job sites for entry. The student’s OSHA Wallet Card will be forwarded within four to six week of successful completion of the course.
Those workers that need their Florida OSHA Safety Training but are not in the construction industry, are encouraged to take the OSHA 10 Hour General Industry Training Course. This Nationally Accepted course covers the essential training for workers that are in manufacturing, distribution, health care, institutions of education and other non-construction industries. Similarly, the 10 hour course can be taken on line and finished in a two-day time period (with up to 180 days maximum). The DOL OSHA Wallet Card follows a few weeks later.
The Outreach OSHA Safety Training also has courses for supervisors, foremen, line managers and executives on basic safety and the principles of managing risk. The OSHA 30 Hour Construction Course is available through computer-based, online instruction. This course is also available with access to its own downloadable, free study guide. The 30 hour courses are typically a four day effort online. The instructions allows you to log in and out of multiple computers to take your training. At the successful end of the course you’ll get your certificate of completion with is an interim document until your OSHA Wallet Card is sent to you in a few weeks.
