OSHA Safety Training For All Virginia Industries Statewide

The Commonwealth of Virginia is many times referred to as the “Mother of President” as eight U.S. Presidents hailed from the great state, more than any other state. In 1607 the London Company established the Colony of Virginia as the first permanent New World English colony. Early politics and plantation economies were dependent on slave labor and land acquired from displaced Native American tribes.  Virginia was one of the 13 original colonies during the American Revolution but later seceded to join the Confederacy during the Civil War. Virgina became the 15th state in 1792, with a rich heritage of governmental leadership.

Virginia has a rich, diverse economy with multiple sources of income, including local and federal government, military, farming and business. Of the over 4 million civilian workers, and one-third of the jobs are in the service sector. Virginia has the highest concentration of technology workers of any state. Computer chips became the state’s highest-grossing export in 2006.

In August of 1984, OSHA certified Virginia’s state plan for health and safety management. Virginia Occupational Safety and Health (VOSH) is part of the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry (DOLI) which is headed by the Commissioner. The main office is headquartered in Richmond, Virginia with field offices located in Abingdon, Lynchburg, Manassas, Norfolk, Richmond, Roanoke, Verona, and Winchester, Virginia.  You may view the Virginia State OSHA Plan here. The Virginia State Plan applies to all state and local government and private sector workplaces in the state, with the exception of federal workers, the United States Postal Service, private sector maritime, federal military facilities, and other federal territories where the state has relinquished jurisdiction to the federal government.

VOSH has adopted the majority of OSHA standards that would relate to state and local government and private sector workplace operations. However, VOSH has adopted the following unique standards and regulations:

  • Confined spaces in the construction and telecommunication industries
  • Overhead high voltage line safety
  • Fall protection in steel erection
  • Reverse signal operation in construction and general industries
